McGoo U: October

Dia de los Muertos

This season is my absolute favorite and I feel like there is inspiration everywhere.  every day!  This month at McGoo U our cookies are inspired by Dia de los Muertos.  I have been fascinated by this holiday ever since I was 13 and my Spanish teacher had us create our own altars and ofrendas for our relatives who have passed away.  We honor those traditions in cookie form as we create marigold, chrysanthemum, papel picado, and sugar skulls.

Another thing we are celebrating this month: McGoo U is 2!  I can’t believe it!  Some of you have been there for the whole cookie-decorating ride and some of you are just joining the party.  Whether you’ve watched every episode or just joined the party, THANK YOU!  It has been an amazing 2 years and I thank you for being a supporter, enabler, cookie friend, inspiration… all of the above.

I was so excited to have Mike Tamplin of Semi-Sweet  as our Expert Lab visiting professor this month!  He is such a master of precision and details and is 100% sweet and fun.

He teaches a wickedly cool witch cookie design that will put a spell on you.  His attention to details and perspective is inspiring and I know you will learn so much!

In Mixing it Up we get to know Mike: what he does in real life, what creative endeavors he is baking up, and… how good is his palate in a blind taste test!

For After School we did a “Hungry Games’ skit.  Cesar Flickerman and Effie Trinkett introduce this year’s Hungry Games tributes and discuss their odds of survival. Featured guest cookiers: Maryann Rollins : The Cookie Artisan Georganne Bell: LilaLoa Mike Tamplin: Semi-Sweet Mike Chris Taylor: Flour Sugar Butter.  You won’t want to miss it!  These cookiers are deadly!

In Smart Cookie I show a variation on the chrysanthemum taught in the McGoo U course that is an quick and easy marigold cookie that will add interest and beauty to your Dia de los Muertos set.

As always we finish off the day with a relaxing and impromptu design using the Extra Frosting from class.

I would love to see what you created using this month’s tutorials.  Remember YOU can earn your varsity letter by sharing your McGoo U inspired creations using the hashtag #mcgoou on Instagram, Twitter, & Facebook.
