McGoo U: February 2016

“Life is a Circus!”

I thought I would re-visit one of my favorite themes for this month’s McGoo U.  One of the punniest holidays ever is coming up as well, so this would be a great jumping off point for a circus inspired Valentine’s Day set.  Really, when isn’t a good time to make circus cookies?!  There are lots of techniques covered in this set including airbrushing, royal icing transfers, painting, and dimensional flood and piping.  It’s nuts!  Come cookie and clown around with me!

Then, we are super honored to have Michele Hester join us in the Expert Lab.  She not only shows us how to make unbelievably gorgeous SugarVeil edible lace, SHE INVENTED THE STUFF!  It was so amazing to watch her work with her mind blowing creation of SugarVeil mix and her gorgeous textured mats.

It looks and feels just like fabric!

She made it look SO easy… and it was fascinating to find out how easy it really is to get such intricate and stunning results!  I wasn’t very experienced with SugarVeil, but had played around with it a bit last October and felt like it was pretty easy to use and I learned things along the way when I did it on my own.  After watching Michele work with it in the Expert Lab, I tweaked what I was doing to follow her methods and I am happy to say those small tweaks made a world of difference!  I was able to create the finest mesh lace and I’m so excited to put it to cookie.  She also breaks out her SugarVeil AirPen (her husband’s creation) and shows us how easy it is to embellish the flexible, edible lace.

The possibilities are endless!  Then Michele and I sat down for Mixing It Up where we talk about how she took her love of sewing and fashion to come up with an innovative creation that changed the way people decorate cakes and now cookies.  We talked a bit about the process it was to make her completely natural and additive-free mix and what a great team she and her husband are as they create, learn, and innovate together.  awwwwww!  If that’s not romantic, I don’t know what is!

This month in Smart Cookie we welcome back accountant Marquita Miller!  We talk about that season that is right around the corner (taxes!) and how we can make it a lot less scary.  She gives tons of tips and advice on what we need to gather and keep track of to prepare for this year, and what we should start doing now to make it easy peasy next year.

In this month’s After School I ambush cameraman Travis and director Darrin who are always saying how amazing they would be at decorating cookies because of all the tutorials they have watched.  I pit them against each other in an impromptu cookie decorating challenge where they have to demonstrate some of the skills they have picked up during their year and a half of filming at McGoo U.  They even had to come up with their “Cookie Name’s.  After settling on the names: Farty McPoo and Jeeze O Pete’s Sweets and decorating several cookies, I took their cookies to a vote on Facebook and Instagram.  Won won?  How were their decorating skills?  Watch and find out!

As always we finish off the day with a relaxing and impromptu design using the Extra Frosting from class.  Have a fantastic Valentine’s Day!

I would love to see what you created using this month’s tutorials.  Remember YOU can earn your varsity letter by sharing your McGoo U inspired creations using the hashtag #mcgoou on Instagram, Twitter, & Facebook.
